We taste the high life on the attraction’s Spring in the Sky experience

London eye afternoon tea

We enjoy a Champagne afternoon tea in a London Eye pod, bursting with seasonal snowdrops, magnolia, tulips, and hyacinths, while watching the capital blossom into life beneath us for the attraction’s stunning new Spring in the Sky experience.

Nothing beats London’s spring awakening - during our serene double rotation, we take in 360° views of daffodils bursting around St James’s Park; sunshine bouncing off St Paul’s, Big Ben, The Shard and the glittering Thames 135 metres beneath us, framed by cherry blossom.

As we step into pod 23, we’re met by beautiful floral scents, decorations, breathtaking views, soft soundscapes and a table set with London Eye tiers, heaving with fresh berry fruit tarts, raspberry dome cakes, scones, pastries and finger sandwiches.

Our VIP Champagne experience means we swerve the queues - London Eye attracts a stonking 3.5 million people a year - and are chaperoned straight from the lounge to our stunning pod.

Here, our host serves us crisp glasses of Moët & Chandon Impérial Brut Champagne, alongside premium teas from the On Pod Tea Chest, or freshly brewed coffee.

The savoury tier includes a spring onion and egg pretzel; delicate smoked turkey ham and cream cheese sandwich; mini seasonal quiche and fresh cucumber, cream cheese and onion sandwich.

The sweet layer is a riot of spring colours, with a light and fresh apricot choux, decorated with edible blossom; a raspberry dome cake topped with real pansies; fresh berries fruit tart, and moreishly moist carrot cake.

We don’t know whether to look at the cakes, the decorations or the views, but luckily our pod moves at a gentle walking pace, allowing us to enjoy all of the above.

The clear, sun-dappled weather gets the memo, meaning we can see as far as Windsor Castle, 25 miles away.

Each of the 32 capsules represents London’s boroughs, numbered one to 33 to omit unlucky number 13.

As we complete our second, dreamy rotation, we polish off the fresh scones with clotted cream and jam, and are serenely brought back to earth and reality.

This limited edition new experience is a seasonal feast for every sense, for a truly unique way to celebrate spring and have a delicious taste of the high life.
