We Experience the Gothic Glamour of this Five Star Landmark

With VB filling our feeds, we pay a timely visit to the famous staircase where Spice Mania began, for a suitably Posh break at the five star, St Pancras London hotel.
We are staying in Barlow House, the newly refurbished, seven-floor wing of the Autograph Collection hotel in the buzzy heart of King’s Cross.
As part of an eight-figure refurb, the 245-room wing (named after the engineer of St Pancras Station’s arch) has had a glow-up, courtesy of designer Nora Witzigmann.

The deep, jewel toned colour schemes and dark walnut and brass of the rooms provide a sophisticated and modern new look, while complimenting the dark romance of the Gothic masterpiece next door.
And what a masterpiece the phenomenally restored, Sir George Gilbert Scott landmark is - the dark and sexy big brother of the grand and airy Barlow Wing, next door.
It is here where tourists flock to see the iconic, sweeping staircase from the Spice Girls’ Wannabe video, which is now roped off for hotel guests only.

This sumptuous space also houses The Hansom, an elegant restaurant serving British favourites, afternoon tea and extraordinary cocktails. Hic.
The sexy darkness is lifted as we return to the Barlow Wing next door, into the sun-dappled, alfresco vibes of its seasonal terrace.
It’s a beautiful, vast space, studded with greenery, hugged by the warm red brick arches, and is buzzing with guests enjoying cocktails with gourmet burgers, salads, and pasta from the hotel’s MI + MI restaurant.

This leads into our favourite spot at the hotel, Booking Office 1869, which Grace Dent correctly described as “Phileas Fogg Acid-Safari chic.”
It makes a theatrical first impression with its Grade II listed gothic architecture, vast windows, soft, moody lighting, filled with palm trees, leopard print chairs and a dramatic, dark wooden bar. We learn that the mirrors behind the bar replace what were once the station’s ticket windows.

Complimentary cocktails are served exclusively to guests here at 5.05pm for the “Punch Ritual” while guests can enjoy the exclusive “G&Tea” ritual in the Hansom Lounge at 7.35pm. A lovely touch, which encouraged us to enjoy more of the spaces.
The hotel also has a stunning, subterranean pool and spa, which is closed for refurbishment during our visit.

Back in our room, we’re surprised by how peaceful it is, despite being directly above St Pancras International Station.
It has all the luxury touchpoint you’d expect from a 5 star hotel, from L’Occitane toiletries, Nespresso Machine, fluffy slippers and robe to a firm and comfortable bed.
The following morning, we’re pleased to return to the Booking Office 1868 for our inclusive breakfast.
Cold plates include exotic fruit salads, peach melba overnight oats, coconut chia seed pudding, pastries, muffins and cereal.

They thoughtfully serve full or half portions of their Benedict and Full English dishes, for the growing Ozempic crew.
I opt for the avocado on toast, perfectly poached with dark orange yolks, topped with shaved parmesan, red onion and lemon parsley on sourdough.
We resist the urge to dance inappropriately on the staircase, as we reluctantly leave this gothic jewel in London’s crown.
